This week we explored the Caves of Cabarete. The caves and lagoons are a natural wonder and part of El Choco National Park located right in our backyard. The park encompasses 77 square kilometers of forests, lagoons, underground rivers, and caves. The website for the park claims that the limestone caves in Cabarete are over 5 million years old!

The water is cold and crystal clear, and in some areas deep enough to swim. There have been recent efforts to clean and maintain the area and the girls were happy about the new sign encouraging visitors to keep the park clean.

The excursions this week were more about exploring new places and enjoying the peace and quiet. Even though the park is within a mile of most of the girls homes, few of them have explored much beyond the entrance to the park.

We walked along trails through the lush green forest, along lagoons and to hidden caves. The girls shied away from the ice-cold waters but the air thick with mosquitoes was enough to make them jump in. They laughed and played and splashed, and yelled each time they saw a fish (they know how much I love fish!). It was a pleasure to see kids just enjoying being kids.
And there’s nothing better than ending the day singing a song or two in the guagua.
