New Experiences – Garlic and Karma

By Tessa

In these few days before school starts we’ve been taking the time to go to see some old friends, visit our favorite places and find new ones. We walked through town to find fresh fruits and vegetables, then to the bakery (panaderia) and the fish market (pescaderia). Everyone we encountered smiled and helped us with directions and politely corrected our Spanish (which is still a work in progress).

Almost home, we forgot the essential ingredient – garlic. At home I’d have no problem asking a neighbor but I’d never venture to ask for some at a restaurant. But this is the north shore of the DR, and that’s why we love it here. I leaned into the kitchen and the chef returned with a bulb. When I offered money, he shooed me away and wished me a good day.

No doubt that there is crime and crazy here, like anywhere else on the planet. But there are a lot of really amazing people, and I believe in karma. That chef is going to get some amazing chocolate chip cookies tomorrow.
